William J. Cotter
is a partner with Coman & Anderson, PC. Prior to joining the Firm, he was the founding member of the Darien, Illinois law firm, Cotter & Associates, LLC. He was also a partner in the Chicago, Illinois law firm O'Brien, Hogan, Fowler & Dwyer from 1985 through 2001. He has been in the continuous private practice of law since 1979, after spending two years as a personal trust administrator with First National Bank of Chicago.
Mr. Cotter concentrates his practice in estate planning and administration, business succession and wealth transfer planning, and business consulting and tax planning for small and medium businesses. He also advises on corporate law, limited liability company law, and general business law. He has devoted a significant amount of time in the areas of real estate development and construction law, and the representation of real estate developers, contractors, construction companies, and representing clients with commercial and industrial real estate purchases and sales, financing and leasing.
A graduate of Purdue University and Chicago's DePaul University College of Law, Mr. Cotter was also an instructor at the DePaul University School of Law. He has authored or co-authored articles on estate and business planning, corporate law, and general business management issues that have been published in such periodicals as the Bar News (of the DuPage County Bar Association), the ICPAS News Journal, Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education's Annual Federal Tax Course, and REJournals.com (Commercial Real Estate News).
In addition to public speaking engagements on various legal and tax issues and personal and estate planning topics, Mr. Cotter has also been a business owner and the operator of several small companies engaged in real estate development and investment. He was elected to the Board of Education for Center Cass School District 66, DuPage County, Illinois, in the November, 1991, 1995 and 1999 general elections, and has served as President of that Board until 2003. More recently he has served on the City of Darien's Comprehensive Plan Committee.
Mr. Cotter and his family reside in Darien, Illinois.
